Tag Clouds everywhere (Nifty Box 1.1)
I am proud to announce, that finally Nifty Box 1.1 is ready and will be released next week (if all goes to plan). Version 1.1 will not only feature Spotlight export, but it will also include tag clouds and a hierarchical tag organisation.
One reason I wrote Nifty Box was, that I thought a hierarchical file structure, where every file has to be put into a tree-like folder/directory path, should be a thing of the past. Tags could be a good way to "put" a file into more than one category. But a pure flat tag organization might throw away useful information about the relationship between the tags/categories. So now NB 1.1 will feature tag folders: you put the tags into a hierarchical tree (if you want to), but not the files. So you can construct a tree like "Science -> Space -> Mars", where "Science" and "Space" are folders and "Mars" is the actual tag. If you then select for example "Science" Nifty Box will show you all items, that have a tag from the "Science" tree. More or less this works like folders and playlists in iTunes.
But this is just organization, now the visualization: Everyone who uses tags knows that after some time the number of tags grows quite fast and browsing them in a list can be quite confusing. Therefore some wise people have created the so called tag clouds, which were one ingredient of web 2.0 right from the beginning. Now - to help you managing your tags - Nifty Box will also feature tag clouds in the tag tree. This is how it will look like:
But if you are confused by all these clouds and don't like modern things, you can still use the traditional list view for the tags:
I still have to do some final adjustments, but I hope Nifty Box 1.1 will be ready by the end of next week.

Is there any chance that you have the functionality to allow the dragging of a directory into nifty-box to tag it and it's contents?

Hi Michael,
You can drag multiple files into Nifty Box : just select all the files from the directory in the Finder and drag them all at once into Nifty Box. They will be tagged with the tag you drop them on.

But can you drag a directory and then all contained files/directories are tagged recursively?

Sorry, for the misunderstanding. Nifty Box currently does not import folders recursively.

Yeah, that's what I was hoping for with 1.1. I guess I'll continue holding off on this app. It looks promising, but until recursive folder import is implemented, it's very limited.

It's always a compromise to decide what to develop next.
For this release I focused on the tag management (and as an addition: Spotlight export), because I thought that this issue was most pressing. This focus was chosen for selfish reasons, because my own Nifty Box now has more than 600 Tags, so I definitely needed a better tag management.
Currently I can't say, what will be in 1.2 as I am still working hard on the 1.1 release, but I'll try to post more often on the blog about the development.

Hi Tim,
just tested your app. It really looks nice. Is there a way to add a search inside of files? That would be great.

Hi, thanks for you interest in Nifty Box!
In the upcoming version 1.1 Nifty Box can export tags and comments to Spotlight. You can then use Spotlight for searching inside the tagged documents.
However this is just a crude work-around and it does not bear the user-friendliness I'd like to have for Nifty Box. I hope to implement some better way to use the full potential of Spotlight searching *inside* Nifty Box in a future release.

Hi Tim and Michael,
I personally don't think that everyone who drags a folder into Nifty Box wants its contents recursively tagged. I've got some pretty messy project folders consisting of hundreds of 1-2K files, and I don't want them all in Nifty Box, just the project folder.
Just my 2c
Andreas
P.S. I meanwhile bought a full license of Nifty Box. Tim, thanks for the great software!

Yes, I think so too. But many people want the inventory of a folder recursively tagged. I think best will be to pop up a dialog asking the user. (Although I very much dislike pop-up dialogs: they remind me of another operating system...)
Hey, and thanks for buying NB!
